We’re only a few months from the beginning of Marvel’s big phase three ending crossover blowout.
While all eyes are on Avengers: Infinity War, there’s a lot we still don’t know about its follow-up, including the title of the film. As it turns out, that’s sort of the point. While Kevin Feige had previously said that the reason Avengers 4 had no title was because it would spoil something in Avengers: Infinity War, the head of Marvel Studios now says that the reason is really just to keep the focus off of Avengers 4, and on Infinity War, where they want it. According to Feige…
” Yeah, I think some of that has been blown out of proportion. We do want the focus to be on Infinity War for now.
Eric Eisenberg was the one that broke the news that the title of Avengers 4 was an apparent spoiler. At the time, there didn’t seem to be much question about it. Kevin Feige was specifically asked if the title was a spoiler, and he responded with a “yeah, for sure.” Now, however, Screen Rant has followed up with Feige and it sounds like the issue isn’t so much that the title is a spoiler, as it is that Marvel thinks if they give the movie a title, people will talk about it more, and they don’t want fans to overlook the other movies Marvel has planned.
That’s certainly understandable. There are two Marvel movies currently set in between now and Avengers: Infinity War, and one certainly has to wonder how many fans are looking completely past them for the big team up. There’s an additional pair of movies set to debut in between the two Avengers films, and there’s a chance both of them could get overlooked once Infinity War is released and people start to look forward to the conclusion. Marvel may have become something of a victim of their own success. Their movies are all so big that now people only care about the ones that are even bigger.
Certainly, if the movie had a title, we’d be here writing about it right now and trying to infer things about the film based on its name. Even if the title wasn’t a spoiler directly, it’s possible that fans could eventually infer things from the title, especially as news began to come out from the filming of Avengers: Infinity War. In that way, perhaps Kevin Feige’s two different responses here don’t necessarily conflict as much as they appear to.
Whether or not the title of Avengers 4 is an actual spoiler, we don’t expect to get the official title until, at the earliest, a post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War. At that point, the film will be a year away and if it’s still missing a title things will get weird. Once we have a title, we’ll know whether or not it would have been a spoiler.
