Not too long ago, Netflix made headlines with the news that the streaming giant would be doubling its catalog. Also making the rounds was that the streamer’s upcoming content would be going heavy on science fiction programming. Well, Netflix is already making good on that via the announcement of three new series slated to arrive in the future. Here is everything you need to know about the plot of Netflix’s upcoming slate of sci-fi series.
The first series is October Faction, which follows monster-hunters, Fred and Deloris Allen. The duo, having traveled around the world tracking down the stuff of nightmares, return to their hometown in upstate New York, when Fred’s father passes away. Joining them are their teenage children, Geoff and Viv. While trying to hide their ties to the secret organization they work for, Fred and Deloris quickly discover that their small-town is not as peaceful as it appears. It sounds like the Allen family will have their hands full when the series arrives on the streaming service.
October Faction is created by Damian Kindler, who will also serve as the series’ showrunner. The show has been greenlit for a ten-episode season. So, a bit of horror and science fiction combined for this one. A premiere date has not been disclosed, so stay tuned. We now shift to Netflix’s next sci-fi offering, which is entitled The I-Land. It will star a roster of familiar faces, and as you may have suspected from the title, the story that brings them together will involve an island.
The I-Land picks up with ten people awakening on a dangerous island. Making matters even worse is that they have no memory of their own identities. Nor do they remember how they ended up on the island. Hence, they set off on a journey to get back home. Before long, they discover the world they are inhabiting is not as it seems.
Confronted with enduring, an equally physical and psychologically grueling, set of challenges, the group is forced to either rise to the occasion of becoming better versions of themselves. Or die being the worst. The I-Land will star Under the Dome‘s Natalie Martinez, The Long Road Home‘s Kate Bosworth, and Magic Mike‘s Alex Pettyfer. The series will be comprised of seven episodes, so a few shy of Netflix’s traditional number. A sign the show should not suffer from any stalling.
The third and final series announced by Netflix is Warrior Nun, which follows a 19-year-old woman who wakes up in a morgue. Imparted with a “new lease on life,” there is a crucial detail that goes along with it. A “divine artifact” is embedded in her back, which means she is now part of an “ancient order” that fights demons on earth. Taking note of this development are forces from both heaven and hell, who want to find her so that they can take control of her.
Warrior Nun is slated for a 10-episode first season. Ghost Wars‘ Simon Barry will serve as showrunner on the series. With the seeming exception of The I-Land, it appears as though two of the three Netflix series will involve the supernatural. A genre, Netflix will be entering into heavily with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Already home to the sci-fi hits Lost in Space, Stranger Things, and Dark, the streamer is going all in on the imaginative realm of science fiction and these new projects all sound promising. Netflix is gearing up for a massive fall with a lot of new television content set to bow this fall on the streaming giant, and it is not the only one.
