Chelsea news: Maurizio Sarri reveals why David Luiz was ‘confused’ under Antonio Conte

And the former Napoli boss says he has been pleasantly surprised by the ability of the Brazilian defender since his arrival at the club.

Luiz has started all seven of Chelsea’s Premier League matches this season, helping them to third in the table after their unbeaten run.

And the former Paris Saint-Germain defender looks to be in the process of striking up a nice partnership with Antonio Rudiger.

The pair looked composed together as the Blues drew with Liverpool on Saturday, only conceding to a late Daniel Sturridge wonder strike.

“When I arrived here, immediately I had the feeling he’s a very good player for my way of football”

Luiz was an integral figure in Chelsea’s title-winning season in Conte’s first year as boss, but made just four appearances in the first half of 2018 as a result of injury and a rumoured falling-out with the Italian.

He was considering offers to leave the club had Conte remained as manager in the summer.

And Sarri, who has started his tenure in west London unbeaten in all competitions, says Luiz is a better defender than he thought.

“Two seasons ago, he was a protagonist,” he said. “Then six months ago, he was not playing, so he was a little confused.

“He’s direct. If he has to say something to the manager, he has to talk to me. I like very much direct people.

“When I arrived here, immediately I had the feeling he’s a very good player for my way of football because he’s a centre-back who is very technical.

“Then I appreciate his qualities as a man. He’s really better than I thought before.”

In his first stint at Stamford Bridge, Luiz won the Champions League and the Europa League before winning the Premier League on his return.

PSG paid £50m for him in the summer of 2014 and he helped them to win Ligue 1 twice, the Coupe de France twice and the Coupe de la Ligue during his stay.

Luiz has previously praised Sarri and his methods, saying the team are much happier under the new boss.

“Sarri is giving us a lot of happiness to play football. We are trying to enjoy,” he told Chelsea TV. “He gives us a lot of confidence. He shows us what he wants. He gives us the details about the game.”
