Riverdale has finally cast Jughead’s mom and sister for Season 3.
As announced at New York Comic Con, Gina Gershon will play Jughead’s mother, Gladys Jones, “a ‘businesswoman’ who runs the salvage yard (chop shop) that doubles as a Serpent compound, and the Serpents all snap to attention when she gives them an order. A Serpent with a GED, she acts as Fagin to a crew of teenaged car parts thieves.” And newcomer Trinity Likins is set for the role of Jughead’s sister, Jellybean “JB” Jones. She’s described as “wise beyond her years, and her favorite bands are Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. Jellybean lives with her biker mom in Toledo where they run scams to make ends meet. And like mother like daughter: Jellybean — who goes by JB now — is quite the little con artist herself.”
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previewed that in addition to the continued threat of Hiram Lodge, who’s now a “full-on villain,” Season 3 will feature a “being” called the Gargoyle King, who’s “tormenting Riverdale, especially the kids.” The new bad guy is related to a Dungeons and Dragons-esque game called Griffins and Gargoyles which is gaining popularity in Riverdale, and as Aguirre-Sacasa recently told ET Online, “The parents of Riverdale are terrified of it because the game is affecting their children. One of our central mysteries starts when the bodies of two students are found in the woods and it’s discovered that they were playing Griffins and Gargoyles and that the main villain of the game — the Gargoyle King — may also be stalking the streets of Riverdale.”
That may tie into what Lili Reinhart teased about the main mystery of Season 3, which she described as “an epidemic – it involves everyone in the town and it’s a crisis.”
Aguirre-Sacasa expanded on that tease: “One thing that we missed in Season 2 was Betty and Jughead as investigators working together to solve a mystery. I loved the first season of True Detective which had a weird, occult mystery, so we wanted to see our teen detectives in a True Detective-like plot; a very dark, very twisted, very twisty mystery.”
Betty has plenty of trauma to juggle in Season 3, between trying to process the fact that her father is a serial killer and the arrival of a new character, Evelyn Evernever, “who shows up in episode 2 and is very mysterious and causing trouble for Betty,” according to Reinhart.
But Betty will also be dealing with the growing threat of The Farm, a cult which has already enlisted Betty’s sister Polly as a member, and will soon lure Alice (Mädchen Amick) into the fold too. “There’s someone who runs the farm who’s very charismatic: Edgar Evernever, Evelyn’s father,” Amick teased, previewing that Alice will become entangled with both Edgar and Jughead’s father, FP, in Season 3.
Whether it’s related to The Farm, the Gargoyle King or Hiram Lodge remains to be seen, but “The parents are caught up in their own mystery as well, we have a lot of scenes where the parents are together which is really fun,” Aguirre-Sacasa teased.
Star KJ Apa also previewed that Archie is understandably “scared” when Season 3 begins, “he knows he could be away from his friends and his family for a long time.” Still, Apa called Season 3, “a gamechanger” for the show.
Riverdale Season 3 premieres Oct. 10 on The CW.
